The secret to the power, the miracles, and the great teaching of our Lord Jesus Christ was His daily fellowship with the Father in Heaven.  Jesus Christ was a person of prayer when He was on the Earth doing ministry those three years. Prayer is important and Jesus teaches us to pray in the Bible.  He talks about it a lot because it is important for you too!

In Matthew 6 Jesus says,

Old church building in Antwerp Belgium- It’s not about a building

“When you pray, you are not to be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on the street corners so that they may be seen by men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full.
-Matthew 6:5

Many people talk about prayer.  They pray to all sorts of things and even dead people who can’t hear them.  God wants you to have a real time with Himself and Jesus demonstrated how we are to do it.  Jesus is strong in telling us not to pray like the the religious people, literally the Bible says ‘hypocrites’, meaning people who do what they tell people not to do.  Looking back at the original Greek of this passage we can see the word hypocrite can also be translated ‘pretenders’.  Why?  The term hypocrite actually comes from the ancient stage.  The hypocrite part was played by an actor who would put on a mask and act like someone he was not.  So what is the Lord Jesus the Messiah saying here?

The world talks about prayer, the world makes prayers pretending to be addressing God, but it is all for show.  They do it in the front of the church, in the government building, even in public to show people how ‘spiritual’ they are.  But in fact, they are not spiritual at all.  In fact, the result of their prayer is just the attention they got when they tried to get everyone’s attention.  It didn’t get God’s attention because God is not listening to pretenders or show people.

God want’s to fellowship with you. He wants to have daily time with you. What about you? Are you wanting to know Him better? Draw near to God, and you can know that He will draw near to YOU! That’s His promise (James 4:8) so take Him up on it today, tomorrow, and everyday!
